The Prince William and Kate Wedding and Why America Cares
This first quarter of 2011 has seen many headlines about the most exciting royal romance news since the wedding of Lady Diana Spencer and Charles, Prince of Wales in the summer of 1981. HRH Prince William is, of course, second in line to the throne behind his father, Prince Charles. In November, Prince William announced his engagement to Kate Middleton, his longtime girlfriend and former schoolmate at the University of St. Andrews. In the months since this announcement, the media has devoted many column inches and broadcast minutes to updates and speculations about the April 29th royal wedding, which will be officiated by Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury in Westminster Abbey.
BBC America has been releasing nearly minute-to-minute news about the upcoming Prince William and Kate Wedding, leading this correspondent to wonder, “Why are Americans so interested in the wedding of two white kids on the other side of the Atlantic?” The interest is undeniable, however, so let us cover what is and isn’t known about the nuptials while engaging in some gentle analysis of our Google searches of “Kate Middleton Wedding Dress Pictures NOW.”
