Rosenau Castle

Rosenau Castle and Park was bought in 1805 by Duke Franz Friedrich Anton of Saxe-Coburg- Saalfeld. He gave it to his son and successor Duke Ernst I. who used it as Summer Residence. From 17806-1817 it was rebuild in the newgothic stye and the Parc was remodelled in the english style.

It was here that on 10.08.1819 prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the younger son of Duke Ernst I. was born. he later married his cousin Queen Victoria of Great Britain. It was later often visited by him and his wife and also after his death Queen Victoria sometimes stayed at the Castle. Duke Ernst II. the successor of Duke Ernst I. didn't use the Castle and let his nephew and successor Duke Alfred the use of it. Duke Alfred died in 1900 at the Cavallery House at the Rosenau. In 1920 the Estate was taken over by the Coburger Ladesstiftung but the daughters of Duke Alfred had use of it until 1938. After the second Wiorld War it was used as Residence for Seniores of Coburg. Only in 1972 it was bought by the State Bavaria who renovated it and since 1990 it is open for Visitors.

St. Augustiner Church at Coburg

The St. Augstiner Church in Coburg was build from 1855-1860 according Plans of Vicenz Fischer-Birnbaun. In honor of Prince August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha wo had helped the project financiell it was inaugurated on the death anniversary of Augustinus von Hipp on 28.08.1860. Under the Church is a Crypt where the member of the catholic branch of the Ducal Family of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha the so called Kohary branch are buried.

When one comes into the Crypt under the Church there is first a little Chapel and then there are 2 Crypts. On the right is the so called Tsars Cryptand then there is another Crypt on the left side.

In the Tsars Crypt are the builder of the Crypt Prince August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1818-1881) and his wife Princess Clementine, née Princess of Orléans (1818-1907) buried. Also their youngest son King Ferdinand I. of the Bulgarians (1861-1948)is buried in this Crypt.

Mausoleum on the Glockenberg, Coburg

During my recent teavel to Coburg i and my friends also made a Visit to the Burial Ground on the Glockenberg. With thanks to netty who had organized it we even got a guided Tour through the Ducal Mausoleum which normaly can not be visited inside.
The Mausoleum, was build in the years 1853-1858 on behalf of Duke Ernst II. for the members of the Ducal Family of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The building is in the shape of a three-nave romanesque Basilica. Insdie the Mausoleum there is a quadtratic Chaepl who is two stores high. On the ground floor there are 2 Crypt 's the northern Corridor Crypt and the southern Corridor Crypt. In the Norhtern Corridor Crypt are buried the Duke Ernst I. and his wifes Duchess Luise, and Duchess Marie. Duchess Luise was first buried in the parish Church of Pfeffelbach nr. Grumbach but in 1846 her Coffin was transferred to Coburg and aftter the Mausoleum was completed in 1860 her Coffin found there its final resting place. Also in the Nothern Corridor Crypt are the Coffins of Duke Ernst II. and Duchess Luise, née Princee of Baden and Prince Ferdinand and his wife Pricness Antonia, née Princess of Kohary and their youngest son prince Leopold.
In the Southern Corridor Crypt are the Coffins of Duke Alfred his wife Duchess Maria Alexandrovna, née Grand Duchess of Russia and their son, Hereditary Prince Alfred. Also their daughter Princess Vicotira Melita and her second husband, Grand Duke Kyrill Vladimirovitch of Russia where buried there but their Coffins where in 1995 transferred to the St. Peter and Pauls Cathedral in St. Petersburg
In a sideroom in the first floor is the Coffin of Duke Ernst Alexander of Württemberg.
