Shopping for a wedding gown can be a nightmare. There is so much of terminology used in these gowns which can drive a normal girl crazy. In reality, wedding dresses have a vocabulary of their own. Before stepping out for shopping, you should understand the basics behind this terminology. This will help you shortlist the perfect gown easily and then you can personalize it as per your liking. Let us do a crash course on the terms used in wedding dresses, necklines and waistlines. We will also see which waistline or neckline goes better with which type of body and which type should be avoided.
Waistlines for wedding dresses:
Basque - Waistline dips below natural waist forming a 'V' in the center. It is suggested for brides who want a bodice having a slenderizing effect of the gown. It should be avoided by women who are petite.
Dropped - Waistline dips below natural waistline and sits more on the hips. It is suggested for those with hour glass figure or larger breasts.
Empire - This waistline is high just under bust. It is suggested for brides with undefined waist, or brides having larger hips.
Natural - Waistline sits between the empire and dropped waistlines. This waistline works with most body types.
Necklines for Wedding Dresses:
Bateau - This neckline follows collar bone from shoulder to shoulder. It is suggested for women with smaller chest size.
Halter - As the name says, the straps go around the back of the neck. It is suggested for women with short waist or women with broad shoulders. This neckline should be avoided by brides with thin figures.
Off-the-Shoulder - This gown sits just below shoulder line and is held up by bodice. This neckline is suggested for those with an hourglass figure and should be avoided by brides with broad shoulders or fuller arms.
Portrait - Neckline with a wide scoop that sits just on shoulder bone. It is suggested for women having fuller arms or those who have a short waist. It should be avoided by girls having broad shoulders or having undefined collarbones.
Scoop - Scoop is a wide "U" shape neckline. It works with most of the figures.
Spaghetti Straps - This neckline has thin or very thin straps that go over the shoulders to back. This neckline is suggested for women with an average or small chest.
Square - As the name says, it is a square neckline. It works with most of the figure types..
Strapless - There are no straps in this dress. The gown is kept up by the bodice. It is suggested for girls who are petite, have an hourglass figure or full figured. It should be avoided by those having smaller chests.
Sweetheart - Heart shaped neckline. It is suggested for an hourglass figure or those having larger chests.
T-Shirt or Jewel - Round like a T-shirt. It is suggested for girls with smaller chest and to be avoided by those with larger chests.
V-Neck - As the name says it is shaped like a "V". This one is for women with average size chest. It should be avoided by those with smaller or larger chests.
