Meet the Middletons

First shown on Monday 18th April on Channel 4 at 9pm 'Meet the Middletons' has been greeted by mixed reactions.

People seemed to either liked it, found it interesting and related to the fact that Kate has descended from quite modest roots or they found it irrelevant and in some cases felt quite angered by it.

For me, it was interesting to find out about her family tree but I found some of the interviews with living 'so called' family members quite comical. You could almost envisage Matt Lucas and David Walliams doing a skit of it, whether intentional by the show's producers or not, the way some of the family were presented was, I thought quite amusing.

The reality is that when I thought about it and compared these people's relationship to Kate to my own family tree, I wouldn't know those relatives either...I'm not sure in this day and age how many people would of Kate's generation.

Regardless, make up your own mind. Here is the show's description as provided by Channel 4 and below that there is a link to Channel 4's 4On Demand so you can watch it and decide for yourself.

From Kate Middleton's 99-year-old great aunt Alice in West London, who thinks Kate's 'too good for them', to her 21-year-old hairdresser cousin Anna from County Durham, Meet the Middletons goes behind the net curtains and into the front rooms of Kate's relatives, showing the life she might have lived but for a few twists of fate.

The film reveals the surprising and often touching family background of the woman who will one day be Queen. It also speaks to other relatives, including Michael, working as a supermarket manager in Wales and realising that from now on 'our family history is the Royal family's history', and Paul, teaching a gym class in Paignton - 'I mean it's just bizarre, we're a family from the North and now one of us is going to be Queen.'

From Kate's working class mining ancestors in the North East to a whole generation of wealthy industrialists' sons wiped out in World War I, Meet the Middletons tells a story about the last hundred years of social aspiration and social mobility in Britain, and how Kate Middleton's rise to the pinnacle of society was possible.
